Sprengel deformity: a rare congenital anomaly of the scapula

چکیده
The authors report a case of a typical Sprengel deformity, a rare morphological anomaly which affects one or both scapula. The anomaly is more frequently a sporadic occurrence, but there are well-documented familial cases where inheritance has been reported. which appears located in a higher position and angles down towards the spine (Warkany, 1972). The anomaly is also known as scapula alata, undescended scapula, or scapula elevata, but the name “Sprengel deformity” is the most common. The first report of the anomaly of the scapula is credited to Eulenburg (1863), who reported a single case. Twenty years later, Willet & Walsham (1883) reported an anatomical description of two patients, and Sprengel (1891) described a clinical report of four patients with this anomaly, which was later named after him. The anomaly is rarely inherited and is more frequently a sporadic occurrence, but there are welldocumented familial cases where a dominant pattern of inheritance has been reported (Wilson et al., 1997). We report here a girl with a typical Sprengel deformity affecting the right scapula. The girl has been followed up for three years.

The Sprengel deformity. Morphometric analysis using 3D-CT and its clinical relevance.
We evaluated scapular dysplasia and malposition in 15 patients with the Sprengel deformity using three-dimensional CT (3D-CT). The shape, height-to-width ratio, the areas of both scapulae, the anterior curvature of the supraspinous portion and glenoid version were assessed on scapular posterior, medial and inferior views. The degree of rotation and superior displacement were measured on the tru...
متن کاملCongenital elevation of the scapula (Sprengel's deformity).
A case of Sprengel's deformity (congenital elevation of the scapula) in a 4-year-old boy, with a major cosmetic defect and compromised shoulder function, especially on abduction, is presented. The boy was operated on by Green's technique, with excellent cosmetic and functional result. Although Woorward's operative technique has generally been preferred in the treatment for Sprengel's deformity,...
متن کاملCorrection in malrotation of the scapula and muscle transfer for the management of severe Sprengel deformity: static and dynamic evaluation using 3-dimensional computed tomography.
BACKGROUND The clinical results of surgical procedures for severe Sprengel deformity have been uncertain. To obtain improved elevation, we consider that it is necessary to realign the lateral border of the scapula for upward rotation. The purposes of the current study were to evaluate the clinical results and range of motion of the scapula after such realignment. METHODS Seven cases of Spreng...

متن کاملWoodward procedure improves shoulder function in Sprengel deformity.
BACKGROUND Sprengel deformity is a congenital failure of descent of the scapula. Limited shoulder abduction and cosmetic appearance are the major concerns. Although the Woodward procedure reportedly affords satisfactory correction, the long-term functional outcome postoperatively has not been addressed. METHODS Eight patients (9 shoulders) who underwent the Woodward procedure for Sprengel def...
